A practical guide to checking cold pressures, reading TPMS warnings correctly, and preventing heat-related tire failures.

Heat changes tire pressure fast. Workshops and drivers need a routine that keeps TPMS alerts meaningful and tire wear under control.

Why heat matters

Ambient heat raises tire pressure before the vehicle even starts moving. Once the vehicle is on the road, friction adds more heat and pushes pressures higher.

That is why workshops should always verify recommended cold pressure, not pressure after a drive.

Inspection routine

Confirm pressures when the vehicle has been parked long enough to cool. Inspect tread wear, valve condition, and any active TPMS fault at the same time.

  • +Check cold pressure against the placard, not the sidewall.
  • +Inspect all four tires plus the spare when equipped with a sensor.
  • +Relearn or reprogram sensors after replacement work.

What to tell customers

Drivers in hot climates should be told that a warning light is not a suggestion. It usually points to pressure loss, sensor failure, or a recent service issue that needs attention.
